Life Demands Both Ends® began as a deeply personal exploration in her Memory Serves series—a collection called DREAM—where the pencil emerged as both symbol and source. While painting one of the works, the idea of the pencil came forward not just as a tool, but as a metaphor for navigating memory, intention, and identity. That spark became literal when, at 2 a.m., Alisa awoke from a dream and sketched on her bathroom mirror the vision of an 8-foot pencil sculpture—with a message floating above:

“Dear Self, So what will you do today?”

As the giant sculpture came to life in her studio, so did the interest—visitors began asking for a smaller version, a keepsake they could hold. That simple question, paired with the sculpture’s presence, inspired the creation of a storybook and ultimately, this gift.
