FLORA SERIES

The FLORA series marks the beginning of my exploration into the botanical world through the medium of watercolor, an adventure ignited during a transformative class at Anderson Ranch Art Center under the guidance of abstract watercolorist Jan Heaton. Jan challenged us to not just paint, but to convey the enormity of nature on paper—encouraging a bold approach that resonated deeply with my creative spirit.

Black-eyed Susans were the focus of my initial foray into this series. The freedom I experienced while painting these vibrant flowers stemmed from the innovative use of both wet and dry watercolor techniques. This approach allowed me to capture the essence and dynamism of the flora, reflecting the lushness and vitality of the natural world.

Each painting in the FLORA series is a vivid memory of nature transformed onto paper, offering a sense of liberation and an intimate connection with the subject. The act of painting big—expanding the petals and colors across the canvas—mirrors the expansive influence of nature on my work and personal growth as an artist.

This series invites viewers to experience the same sense of freedom and wonder that I feel each time my brush meets the canvas. It's a celebration of both the delicate and the bold aspects of nature, highlighting the beauty and resilience of floral life through expressive colors and fluid forms.
